Hazardous Area Classification

Hazardous Area Classification

Hazardous Area classification is a method of determining the likelihood with which an explosive atmosphere may occur in a given location. Hazardous Areas classification may be derived in many ways, such as by example, specific instance calculations, and modeling.

These methods vary significantly in both time and cost so typically, if an example similar to the site condition exists, then the “by example (source of release)” method is usually preferred as a cost-effective and conservative solution.

The Hazardous Areas classification standards typically used in Australia are AS/NZS 60079.10.1 (flammable gases and vapours)

and AS/NZS 60079.10.2 (combustible dust).

In general, classification in accordance with the follow codes are also acceptable, where their application to particular situations can be clearly demonstrated:

  1. IP 15 (Energy Institute), Model Code of Safe Practice for the Petroleum Industry, Part 15: Area Classification Code for installation handling Flammable Fluids.
  2. API RP 505 (American Petroleum Institute), recommended Practice for “Classification of Locations for Electrical Installation at Petroleum Facilities classified as Class I, Zone 0, Zone 1 and Zone 2″.
  3. APRI RP 500 (American Petroleum Institute), recommended Practice for “Classification of Locations for Electrical Installation at Petroleum Facilities classified as Class I, Division 1, Division 2″.
  4. BS 5908, Code of Practice for fire precaution in the chemical and allied industries.

API RP 505 (American Petroleum Institute), recommended Practice for “Classification of Location for Electrical Installations at Petroleum Facilities classified as Class I, Zone 0, Zone 1 and Zone 2, Section 10, may be demonstrated as more applicable to this particular situation, and whose classification methodology is adopted, in part, by AS/NZS 60079.10.1 Annex B “Generalised Method of Classification”.
